The national survey research component includes various methodological approaches across the 5-year grant period using random sampling surveys and the Faith Communities Today (FACT) collaborative partnership. These approaches include:

  • A pre-COVID baseline portrait from the 2020 FACT survey of over 15,000 congregations.
  • Targeted topical surveys explore discrete components 1-2 times annually from 2021-2026.
  • A longitudinal panel study tracking 250 congregations/clergy annually from 2022-2026.
  • Nationally representative key informant surveys tailored to COVID issues conducted in 2023 and 2025, aiming for at least 5,000 churches each time.
  • A member/attendee survey examining perceived changes to religious life during and after the pandemic in fall of 2024, with the goal of collecting over 25,000 attendee responses.
  • A qualitative participant observation and interview case study effort in 81 congregations in 9 different regional locations of the United States.
  • The research will also collaborate with other ongoing external projects designed to map the changes to congregations.
