Finances and Faith: A Look at Financial Health Among Congregations in the Post-Pandemic Reality
The Hartford Institute for Religion Research has released its latest report, “Finances and Faith: A Look at Financial Health Among Congregations in the Post-Pandemic Reality.” This comprehensive study examines the financial landscape of religious congregations in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, offering insights into the challenges and adaptations faith communities are experiencing.
Drawing from nationally representative survey data collected in 2020 and 2023, the report explores various aspects of congregational finances, including income and expenses, online giving trends, per capita contributions and the overall financial health of both congregations and clergy leaders. Key findings reveal that while the median income of congregations has reached a 15-year high, it’s not keeping pace with inflation. The study also highlights the growing popularity of online giving, with nearly half of congregations reporting extensive use of digital donation platforms.
Positive Financial Outlook
Despite economic pressures, the report presents a surprisingly positive outlook on congregational financial health. A majority of religious leaders assess their congregation’s financial situation as good or excellent, with only 11% reporting financial difficulties — the lowest percentage in nearly two decades. The study also delves into the direct impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on congregational finances, noting that about 30% of faith communities felt their financial viability was at risk during this period.

This report provides crucial data for religious leaders, policymakers and researchers seeking to understand the evolving financial landscape of American faith communities. As congregations navigate post-pandemic realities and broader societal changes, the findings underscore the need for creative approaches to funding and sustaining religious organizations in the face of ongoing challenges.
